"I really do sincerely hope something can be done about the destruction that mining brings on," said Secretary Gina Lopez who advocates the total ban of mining here in the country. Mining Industry in the Philippines has been a disputable issue again because of its hazardous effects on human and to our environment.

Mining in the Philippines is one of the greatest contribution in this country because Philippines is known as the fifth most mineral rich country in the world of copper, nickel, gold and chromite. This has been the home of the largest-copper gold deposit in the world that’s why every country wants to invest in mining industry here in the Philippines but regardless of its good contribution in our country it still has a lot of impacts that can destroy our mother earth.

Here are the effects of mining industry in the Philippines:

Mining has an effect on the quality of the air, Heavy metals like sulfur dioxide is polluted into the air by unsafe smelter operations with insufficient safeguards that can destroy our atmosphere. Another one is in our water, Toxins like cyanide and mercury are used in the extraction of minerals that can permanently pollute the water. In addition to that mining has also a great impact on our land, it might lead to erosion that is very dangerous in our land. And due to people digging in search of precious minerals, a lot of areas are pock marked by thousands of small holes. Lastly the local communities, this may be a way of losing the livelihood of every Filipinos living in our country, mining industry who promised to compromise scholarships and livelihood to those affected people are not always fulfilled.

Mining is still considered as a hazardous industry, though it has its advantages yet the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages of its existence. You may not see it but it is slowly destroying our mother earth which is not a good response to what it is giving and doing for us.
