Keep Muskegon a Great Place to Live, Work and Play!
Mayor Warmington, the Muskegon City Council, and the Muskegon Planning Commission:
Muskegon has a critical decision before it that will impact our community for the next 100 years. Muskegon’s lakeshore property is an asset to attract both current and future economic development. Muskegon needs to focus on the Blue Economy-economic activities involving water, water conservation and proper water use for manufacturing, recreation or tourism. Clean, sustainable development which includes tourism and most importantly, waterfront development focused on clean jobs and marine research will bring jobs and investment to Muskegon’s lakefront. The redevelopment of the old Sappi site must be done right.
o The former Sappi property needs to be fully tested, evaluated, then cleaned and remediated so that legacy pollution is no longer a threat to the health of the future users of the site, the community or the lake. The City of Muskegon should ensure that redevelopment of the former Sappi site is consistent with Muskegon’s vision to grow the Lake Effect Experience and the Muskegon Master Plan which states “future development should occur in a manner consistent with the character of the surrounding area, recognize and protect the integrity of the Muskegon Lake, and be consistent with the anticipated and desired lakeshore development.”
o New development should include public access to the waterfront, which research demonstrates raises property values of nearby properties, along with corresponding tax revenues for the city. This maximizes the community investment in the bike path and shoreline habitat restoration.
o We request that all proposed and approved uses of the property meet the recommendations in this petition so that the community creates a legacy of which we can be proud.
Muskegon’s future depends on making the right decision today. Keep Muskegon a beautiful place to live, work and play.
