Recently we have seen the DC Fire and EMS department in the news constantly. Apparatus failures, slow response times and the constant lack of paramedics. These failures are a direct result of mis-management and their failed policies. The critical paramedic shortage is due to 50 paramedics leaving and not being replaced. In two years there hasn’t been any active firefighter/paramedic recruitment. Apparatus failures are due to lack of maintenance, replacement, and reserve equipment. Slow response times are due to an ever growing population and growing demand for service. No additional units are being added, but management responds with a plan to reduce the total work force by 25% and a staffing model that leaves the city without any paramedic ambulances at night. Public safety is not negotiable and our lives are being gambled every day by this administration. So call on Mayor Vincent Gray and DC City Council to demand action. Demand a fully staffed, equipped and prepared Fire and EMS Department. The time you need to dial 911, it’s already too late to realize change is needed.
