Please Approve Golf Carts for use in Lordship
Why this petition matters

We, the residents of the Lordship section of Stratford, CT, would like to request consideration be given to the passage of a golf cart ordinance. We understand that not all roads in Stratford would allow for the safe operation of golf carts, however, Lordship, which consists of mainly local roads and 25 mile per hour roads, supports the guidelines put in place by the State of Connecticut. Although the State of Connecticut does not manage the use of golf carts or registers them, they do supply basic requirements for their use. We request the Mayor, Laura Hoydick, Chief of Police, Joseph McNeil, and our town council members to take the time and consider this request. In speaking with the local police departments in both towns, both have had overwhelming positive things to say. Currently, Old Saybrook is in its 12 season of allowing golf carts, and has 600 registered golf carts in four beach communities and East Lyme has 195 registered golf carts. In accordance with section 14-300g of the Connecticut General Statues, the minimum requirements for operation of golf carts are the following:
- The operator of any golf cart shall carry his or her valid motor vehicle operator's license while operating such golf cart.
- Operation is limited to daylight hours only.
- Each golf cart shall be equipped with an operable horn.
- Each golf cart shall be equipped with a flag that is positioned to assist operators of motor vehicles in observing the location and operation of such golf cart.
- No authorization shall be granted for operation on any street or highway where the posted speed limit is more than twenty-five miles per hour.
- Any person who operates a golf cart in violation of these requirements, or the violation of any insurance requirement, or any other conditions or limitations established by the local traffic authority shall have committed an infraction.
In addition to the above guidelines, both towns register golf carts, supply golf cart plates, and East Lyme requires proof of insurance. I will be supplying copies of each towns ordinances under separate cover.
Please let us know how we proceed forward with a favorable outcome for all.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
