WalkingMatters started this petition to Cllr. Tom MacSharry (Mayor) and

Sligo County Council and its agents use Pistol, a herbicide which contains glyphosate, to control weeds along streets and alleyways.

A 2015 study by the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer found that the herbicide glyphosate was classified as probably carcinogenic to humans, with a Group 2A classification, which means that it probably has the potential to cause cancer in humans.

We need to reduce, replace, and where possible eliminate the use of herbicides and particularly glyphosate due to the potential risk to the environment and human health as highlighted by the World Health Organisation (2015 Report on Evaluation of organophosphate herbicides).

Following community action on the issue, Leitrim County Council voted to ban the use of glyphosate in public areas in 2017.

Dublin City Council has been trialing alternative control methods to herbicides such as hot water, foam stream, flame weeding and concentrated vinegar to replace the use of herbicides.

Please sign the petition to demand that Sligo Council Council stops using glyphosate as a weedkiller.
