Star McDade started this petition to Mayor Steven Fulop

On June 1, 2019 Light rail service for predominantly black neighborhoods in Jersey City, NJ were decommissioned without adequate communication or reasonable  efforts to provide notice to residents. We later found it would be down 9 months, returning March 1st.

Shuttle buses have been implemented; however, they have proven to be unclean and dangerous (various fights, etc). AND worst of all, they often add 20-30 minutes to our commute times. Also, this requires those that are physically challenged to find (and fund) other means of transport. Many of us have had to fund other solutions.

But it’s now time to stop. The city needs to fulfill its commitment to the thousands of residents impacted daily! We often question if these challenges would exist in other (more affluent) areas of JC? The lack of information from anyone continues to raise concerns in our minds and those of our neighbors near MLK and stops beyond.

After contacting Mayor Steven Fulop, I was told that they shared our concerns—but that this was an issue with the Governor.

However, this closure is due solely to “pipe” and other work required by the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA) that operates both sewage’s and water systems of Jersey City.

The JCMUA is run by a Board of Commissioners that are all appointed by the Mayor of Jersey City (with consent of City Council).
This petition is to push the Mayor to show he cares about ALL Jersey City residents and fulfill the commitment to finish the JCMUA work so that Light Rail service to MLK, Garfield & Westside Avenues can be restored.
There has been no communication and/or updates shared locally or online anywhere on before or since March 1st. Short of a few news articles we have been unable to find ANYTHING from the Mayor about the 9+ month closure of a key transportation source used daily by thousands of JC residents.  This just further speaks to the indifference and/or lack of regard for certain citizens of the JC community.
