Dear Mayor Steven Fulop, Mr. Rolando R. Lavarro Jr., Mrs. Joyce Watterman, Mr. Daniel Rivers, Mrs. Denise Ridley, Mrs. Mira Prinz-Arey, Mr. Richard Boggiano, Mr. Michael Yun, Mr. James Solomon, and Mr. Jermain Robinson:
The staff of the Jersey City Public Schools work tirelessly everyday for the benefit of their students. Many teachers spend hundreds of dollars to buy supplies for students each year. According to a 2017 survey done by WalletHub, which ranked 100 of the most caring cities across the United States, Jersey City teachers ranked #1 for “Most Caring Teachers for Students’ Well Being.” Even with the financially crippling costs of rising health care and pension contributions, Jersey City Public School employees are still some of the most generous workers donating their money, supplies, and time to the families of Jersey City. It is time for the city to give back to the public school workers who do so much for the children of Jersey City by eliminating their parking permit fees for the zones their schools are located in.
Thanks to Chapter 78, public school workers have been faced with financial hardships that have led to less take home pay than what they were taking home 10 years ago. By issuing free parking permits, this would not only alleviate some of the financial burdens but it would also eliminate the stress of having to worry about receiving a parking ticket or a boot when the focus should be on the students.
Many of the public school staff live in the city, but they still must pay for a parking permit. They also have to pay an additional fee if they don’t live in the zone their school is located in. For the other workers who commute to Jersey City, they already pay outlandish commuting costs between gas and tolls. They also must pay an additional $200 to $300 a school year for a parking permit. Is this really how the mayor and city coucil want to thank the people who educate the children of city by charging them to park?!
We ask Mayor Steven Fulop and the members of the City Council; Rolando R. Lavarro Jr., Joyce Watterman, Daniel Rivers, Denise Ridley, Mira Prinz-Arey, Richard Boggiano, Michael Yun, James Solomon, and Jermain Robinson to please provide the public school employees with free parking permits to park within their school zone between the hours of 7:00 am and 4 pm.
Many school employees arrive an hour before work to find a spot and most stay well until after 3 pm. However, we are requesting the permit be issued until 4pm to allow for additional time for late student pick ups, additional help for students, contractual 3:45 pm professional development days, lesson planning, grading, etc.
We ask the mayor and the City Council to step in and help by allowing Jersey City Public School workers to park for free outside of their school. Many just cannot afford the cost of a parking permit. Please show your appreciation for their hard work and dedication to the children of this city by approving this request in time for the 2018-2018 school year. Thank you so much for your consideration.
