Why this petition matters

***Who will come stand with us against Mayor Allender’s racist attitude as he tries to shut down public access to the Memorial Park Bandshell***

We the undersigned are community leaders and organizations devoted to ending hunger and houselessness in the homelands and treaty territory of the Oceti Sakowin. We are the good hearted people of the Black Hills, OyateKin ChanteWastepi. We oppose the attempt to end and relocate our fourth year of offering a weekly meal of traditional and comfort foods, camaraderie, prayers, azilya, talking circles, community education, healing and referrals for all of our relatives and the unhoused community of Rapid City. The bandshell is the customary public space for freedom of speech, assembly and association in our city. We oppose the politics of cruelty and scapegoating exemplified by Mayor Steve Allender in the attempt to demand that we no longer feed our relatives. This is our land, our streets and no one is homeless in their own occupied homelands. We stand by the fact that no one should go hungry on the streets of Rapid City, and for four years have made sure no one is hungry every Friday afternoon. We will continue to assert our right to be generous neighbors and compassionate relatives by publicly giving away and offering food, care, and resources to the most vulnerable and victimized members of our community.
