Residential Landlords Charge Rent at Cost during COVID-19 for Hospitality Workers

In this moment of crisis, we hope the City of Austin has begun to think through solutions for all of us in the hospitality industry that are suffering through the COVID-19 crisis particularly in the aftermath of the correct, but devastating decision to cancel SXSW.

Housing is a basic human right, and sadly, so many members of our restaurant community are going to struggle to make rent this month, as restaurants shutter and as business as usual grinds to a halt.

The City of Austin and Mayor Adler should mandate that for the next two months, landlords must charge rent "at cost." This keeps landlords whole financially, but allows us to keep a roof over our heads while we navigate these difficult times. This is not a time for profit.

There's never been a more challenging time for our entire industry but I've also never been more hopeful that this moment will force us all to be better leaders for our restaurant communities.
