On November 13th City Council is going to vote whether to accept the Evanston Lakehouse and Gardens proposal to re-purpose the Harley Clarke mansion for use as an educational and event space. But what if we think outside the box? What if we decide not to preserve the built environment, but instead preserve and expand the natural environment? A group of Evanston residents have created an alternative plan: Lighthouse Dunes - www.lighthousedunes.com
Lighthouse beach is not just a wonderful beach, it is also home to the last natural dune between Wilmette and Indiana. It is a true gem. If we were to remove the structures on the Harley Clarke site, rid the dune of invasive species, and maintain the key elements of the Jens Jensen gardens, we create a green space for all Evanston residents to enjoy for generations to come. This is a low cost, low liability solution that would create a naturalized environment that would truly be for all. Evanston is all about parks for the people.
Please support the natural environment over the built environment. Let’s leave a legacy of a beautiful natural lakefront. Evanston residents cherish the natural environment and we have a rare opportunity to add more green space.
