My 12 yr old son trains at Nikko JuJitsu School on the corner of Martha st and S. 5th st along with 40+ other children. Not to mention their parents, the adult practitioners and instructors from 630pm to 730pm on Tues and Thursday.
In Dec of 2016, I requested that the San Jose, CA DOT Traffic Safety Dept look into placing a stop sign on the corner of Martha St and S. 5th st because it's unsafe to cross the busy street.
The school is open various hours during the week and Saturdays as well but the busiest days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. The different class hours are from 5:00-6:00 pm, 6:30-7:30pm, 7:30 -9:30 pm. However, the 5pm class has only on the ave. of 10 to 12 students from what I witnessed.
I've been in contact with Jimmy Zhou who is the assigned traffic investigator of the DOT since Dec of 2016 regarding placing a stop sign @ the corner of Martha & S. 5th St. In Feb 2017, he did a stop study and found that a stop sign was not warranted. So I suggested a crosswalk, I gave him the busiest times at the crosswalk which is 15 -20 mins before the 6:30 pm class and 5-10 mins after the class ends @ 7:30 pm. Instead of doing the study during the busiest times, he conducted a study on Tues only from 5-6 pm, which is not a true study of the amount of foot traffic because that class has less students compared to the later class.
Although, pedestrian warning signs were installed on both eastbound and westbound on Martha St, it's still not safe to cross Martha street.
I don't understand why does a side st such as S. 5th st and Martha have a stop sign with a crosswalk, whereas Martha which is a busier st does not have either.
We need a stop or a yield sign with a pedestrian crosswalk on the corner of Martha and S. 5th st. Please help us by signing this petition so our kids and their parents, adult practitioners, instructors, and the rest of the community can safely cross Martha street before someone gets injured.
