Welcome!

Spartans for Sustainability is working to ban the distribution of single-use plastic straws in the city of San Jose.

Every day in the United States, approximately 500 million plastic straws get used and thrown away. By the year 2050, the amount of plastic in the ocean will outweigh fish in the world. Straws end up in our oceans where they pollute the water and harm wildlife. In addition, the microplastics and chemicals created as a result of single use plastic pollution have created a toxic environment for our food supply.

Currently, there are a few major cities in the U.S. like San Francisco, Washington D.C., Santa Cruz, and Seattle that have implemented a successful ban on plastic straws.

Spartans for Sustainability hopes to have San Jose join that list of cities too! We feel it is a human right to have access to clean and healthy oceans for upcoming generations to enjoy. We propose to eliminate single-use plastic straws in San Jose by food service vendors with the exception of people requiring them for medical purposes.
