Rowenna Davis started this petition to Mayor Sadiq Khan

Dear Sadiq,

On behalf of so many who are worried about climate change, I’m calling on you as our mayor to make our capital carbon neutral by 2030. Such an ambitious goal would make us leaders in the fight against climate change. It would demonstrate solidarity with people suffering from extreme weather conditions exacerbated by global warming from Australia to Bangladesh, to the Philippines and beyond.

With proper planning and leadership, this goal would also improve air quality for Londoners and provide new jobs in sectors from technology to infrastructure. Children with asthma, some of whom I know can’t go out on high pollution days because of respiratory illness, would be able to enjoy the freedom all children deserve.

Labour already has a proud record on the London Assembly. Policies like the congestion charge demonstrate that what was once unthinkable can become mainstream. As mayor, you have built on that great record with action on air quality and calls to make London carbon neutral by 2050. As you approach your next election this May, a pledge to bring that forward to 2030 would be a momentous move that would mean so much not just to Londoners, but to the world.

Your strong record means you have the credibility to make this happen. A Green New Deal for London building on your work to introduce more pedestrianised zones, investment in electric cars and charge points, transition funds for those who need it, renewable energy cooperatives, extending public transport and the Santander cycle scheme , extending low emission zones, investing in building insulation, improving building regulations and moving to zero waste systems so we can shut polluters like my local Beddington incinerator, are all actions we can and should be taking to make this happen.

I appreciate that doing this properly will require more devolution from national government - something I know you and your team have repeatedly called for. Those of us who have signed this petition will campaign alongside you for greater devolution and allocation of resources to make this possible.

Making London carbon neutral is a moral imperative for the decade. It is bold, it is necessary and I hope it is something you will consider for our great city.

Yours,

Rowenna Davis
