Dear Mayor Khan: The Skyline Campaign is delighted that a new era has started at City Hall, one that will, no doubt, prove in many ways to be more inclusive and cohesive than the previous one.
The next few months will be an opportunity to develop a real VISION for London, shaping its future and deciding its course from many different perspectives. It is a time to think deeply about what London means to all of us, and how to allow it to expand and grow, while preserving and enhancing its unique character for future generations.
The Skyline Campaign is totally committed in assisting the Mayor's task-force with devising appropriate solutions for the severe housing crisis that London is facing. Towers for the wealthy are however not the solution. There is instead an amazing opportunity to create a more beautiful, more functional, more equal city. It must not be squandered.
The short-termist approach to London's built environment that distinguished Boris Johnson's regime must be replaced by a set of thoughtful, creative, informed, long-term strategies, supported by policies that have been analysed and agreed by experts, local communities and countless other stakeholders.
This takes time to be done well.
On behalf of many many Londoners, outraged by the huge number of poor quality skyscrapers littering the London skyline, we would like to ask you to consider granting a moratorium on planning consents for buildings 20 storeys or more - for the next six months, in order to allow a city-wide debate to occur on this subject. Too many world-wide cities have become totally "generic", buried in steel and glass, obliterating forever their distinct identity - never to be recovered.
London is at a watershed: with 436 towers in the pipeline, it might already be too late. Please help us give the London we know the chance of pulling back from the abyss.
This petition is promoted by The Skyline Campaign:
The Skyline Campaign was formed in early 2014 when it emerged that more than 230 new towers had either received planning consent in London or were in the pipeline. There are now 436 towers in the pipeline. The Skyline Campaign is not against tall buildings, but aims to raise awareness of the irreversible consequences for London of the current unbridled tower construction, much of which has happened without adequate public awareness or planning policy. The Skyline Campaign is lobbying for a major public debate regarding a new vision for the capital; it also demands well-considered and effective policy change, to bring much greater scrutiny and control to the construction of tall buildings across the city.
