Vaping Should Be Made Illegal in the United States

Do you know how many high school students reported current e-cigarette use at the end of 2020? These flavored devices have caused three million of our teens to become addicted.  Simah Herman was a vibrant, normal girl just like you who was introduced to vaping and eventually became addicted.  She had her whole life ahead of her, and later ended up in a medically-induced coma, not being able to breath on her own.  Herman now speaks out to teens today to help share her story and help prevent teens from doing what she did.  Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Julia Brown and I am here to discuss why vaping should be illegal in the United States of America.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS

How many of you here know what chemicals are mixed into a regular vape?  Researchers found that users are being exposed to an assortment of potentially harmful chemicals, including nicotine and formaldehyde, as well as heavy metals, such as lead. The FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several state health departments also launched an investigation into a deadly lung condition directly linked to vaping that had sickened hundreds of people and killed several more.  One chemical in many flavored e-liquids, diacetyl, has been linked to an incurable lung condition known as popcorn lung.  Two to Eight weeks.  You might think ‘i'm talking about the time it took for your household item to come from Amazon.  Actually, I’m talking about the time it takes for a vape user to contract popcorn lung.  So, I am going to let you reflect on this question, do you think that vaping to get that high or that after-vape effect is really worth it?

MENTAL EFFECTS

Brain damage to the prefrontal cortex can cause trouble using critical thinking skills, having trouble decision making, differences in personality, and behavioral differences. Permanent brain damage in the part of the brain that’s responsible for memory, emotion, and critical thinking.  You might think I'm describing the effects of when you get a concussion.  No, I am talking about the mental effects of vaping in teens.  When teens are faced with conditions such as depression and anxiety, they are more likely to become addicted to the use of e-cigarette.  Users of e-cigarettes are significantly more likely to report low self-esteem, impulsivity, and to have mental health histories of attention-deficit disorder, anxiety, depression and more.  Now, does that sound worth it?

SOCIAL EFFECTS

How would you react to your best friend vaping?  My real question is, would you join them?  In a teens life, one of the most important things in their life is their social status.  Whether it be their reputation out of school or in school.  Many teens chase popularity and end up making poor decisions that they wouldn’t usually make.  Peer pressure can cause these poor decisions.  Well the same thing goes for vaping.  Teens around the U.S. may ` \]have started to vape because someone either made them to, or they think it is considered cool.  Well, it’s not.  Vaping is an epidemic that causes people to have a variety of health and mental effects.  I’m going to leave you with this one question, do you think vaping is cool.
