Why this petition matters

SEPT 29, the iconic Don Valley tree that goes by the names of 'Cricket' or 'The Tree' in E.T. Seton Park was taken down by the City of Toronto, without consultation, prior notice, or any information whatsoever on the reason why. Our best guess is that it was 'in the way' of new park infrastructure. We are devastated and outraged.

This tree, located at the bottom of the park entrance road off of Thorncliffe Park Drive, was not any tree: besides providing a beautiful sight and shade on hot days, it formed a special meet up place for many communities including mountain bikers, trail runners, hikers, dog walkers, and families. This is where folks from all directions (literally and figuratively) came together to connect, share stories, laugh, rest, and catch our breath before continuing our path into the valley. This tree did not deserve to be cut down, and we demand a new tree back in its place.

Our parks are sacred places to those in need of a break from our congested city lives. To connect to nature and each other, to recharge and appreciate life in all forms. Taking away iconic features like this tree and therefore destroying an important community place, is unacceptable.

Please also email councillor_robinson@toronto.ca whose ward this is, and mayor_tory@toronto.ca to demand a tree gets replanted in its place and let them know that the City of Toronto cannot destroy our public trees for no good reason.
