Robert Ong started this petition to Mayor John Tory

The current namesake of Dundas Street, Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, has garnered great controversy over the past year because it has come to light that he delayed the abolishment of the Atlantic slave trade. Furthermore, there is no historical account that Dundas had ever set foot on the land that is today Canada. Hence last month in July 2021, Toronto City Council voted in favour of renaming Dundas Street, with a new name to be announced by April 2022. While City Council decides upon what to rename the street, we the citizens of Toronto would like to propose that the street be renamed in honour of the late Premier of Ontario Bill Davis.

Unlike Henry Dundas who never even visited the land that would eventually become Canada, Premier Davis almost single-handedly developed the Province of Ontario into what it is today. From modernizing the public education system, prioritizing the expansion of public transit, expanded the Ontario Human Rights Code and many other accomplishments, we strongly believe that the best way to honour the legacy of this extraordinary premier is to rename one of Toronto's major streets after William (Bill) Grenville Davis.
