Innis Residence Council started this petition to Mayor's Office, City of Toronto (Mayor of Toronto) and

The current design of the intersection located at St. George Street and Sussex Avenue presents a hazard to the hundreds of pedestrians using the space every day. The poor design and lack of visual signals put both drivers and pedestrians at risk of injury and death.

Located outside of the Innis College Residence, Innis College Building, Robarts Library, Rotman School of Management, and several family households, the crosswalk is relied upon by a variety of community members on a daily basis.

Presently, we have identified the following issues in conversation with Innis College residents:

  • The stop signs are not always obeyed
  • The stop signs are too far away and are too small
  • The crosswalks' markings and stop lines are absent
  • The intersection is too large, resulting in vehicles stopping in the middle of the crosswalk. As a result, pedestrians feel intimidated by the standing cars, prompting them to rush across the street
  • When vehicles fail to stop, pedestrians in the middle of crossing become vulnerable, as they are often forced to linger between lanes of traffic to avoid a collision
  • At night, visibility is lower and these issues are further exacerbated

We propose any of the following changes, though any improvements would be appreciated:

  • Moving the crosswalks approximately 2 metres closer to each other
  • Increased signage for vehicles to stop
  • Making clearer indication of a pedestrian crosswalk, i.e. adding white painted lines
  • Addition of a speed table
