We represent a group of parents and constituents surrounding Ellesmere

Montessori School (EMS), located near the intersection of Ellesmere and Warden in Scarborough. Last week, we got the devastating news that our kids' child care was going to shut down in just two weeks. In just two weeks, 41 kids will have no childcare spaces and no school to return to in September. At a moment’s notice, we parents, who are nurses, teachers and other frontline workers, are scrambling to find a solution.

We are losing not just childcare spaces -- in a city with a dire shortage, having 41 spots vanish is gut wrenching enough -- but also a vital space that has been a refuge and hub for the community since 1973.

Now, an absentee landlord with no roots in the community is buying the church which means so much to our community and throwing families, children and educators into disarray. It has felt like an absolute nightmare.

Last Tuesday, when the school’s director gathered the parents to give us an opportunity to ask questions, so many of us broke down crying.

These kids have really built a community here. So many of our children have cried at the thought of not seeing their friends and teachers next year. They have had such a tumultuous year of online learning and being in quarantine. The hope of returning in September to a new normal was snatched away and has left parents scrambling to find a solution when daycare spaces are already so limited.

The fact that it is all sudden and with only two weeks notice just doesn’t seem fair or sit well with us or the residents in the community.

We are appealing to you to take up our cause and to support us in finding a solution for our 41 children. This is a pressing matter as the school has been asked to pack up and leave by August 25. Time is of the essence.

Sincerely,
Ellesmere Montessori School Parents Council
