Cities around the world have effectively incorporated various modes of transportation into their public networks, yet we don’t seem to take notice. LRT’s and Aboveground Rail could very well compliment the subway network in a far more cost effective and realistic manner. The abandoned Jane LRT would have formed a vital link between the Bloor-Danforth Line and York University Station, along with the planned LRT’s on Eglinton and Finch. Moreover, it would have connected the peripheral, underserved Jane and Finch neighbourhood with the rest of the city, and have provided reliable and efficient service. If we hope to create an equitable society, we need to start by providing opportunity to the traditionally lower-income periphery; this would be a leap in the right direction.
While it is currently defunct, the conditions are right to push ahead and get it back on the table.
