Sumukh Tendulkar started this petition to Mayor Ruthanne Fuller

We all have seen pictures of people playing basketball, rugby, or just bunched up together, despite the fact that we are 4+ weeks into the social distancing. I am among those who believe this behavior is not just reckless but also dangerous.

Yesterday I witnessed this play out at Cold Spring Park - tennis courts were fully occupied, and basketball was in full swing. The cops came and broke up the games. While most people left the park, a bunch of people still hung around with the intention to return to basketball when the police left. The police did not have the authority to enforce and consequently did not issue any written warnings or citations.

If their behavior was dangerous to the society, the fact that police lack authority to enforce is disappointing.

In your email from March 30th, you decided to close these courts with zip ties. We believe this is a good decision. In the same email you shared the sad news - number of cases in Newton tripled in the past week and a few Newton residents  have died. We don't believe we can wait any longer to enforce your decision.

We ask you two things:

1. Authorize the police to enforce the rules.

2. Please include number of written warnings and citations by police in your daily emails.

Thank you
