Wayne Gibbs started this petition to District Council of Yankalilla

We the undersigned register our strong dissent to both the CEO and to the Elected Members of the District Council of Yankalilla regarding threatened legal action against the editor of the Yankalilla Regional News, over the issue of cartoons that very briefly appeared in the March online edition, and which were removed from the paper edition. These cartoons were simply expressing what the author was hearing while moving among the community.

We object to the use of Ratepayers monies being used to fund personal legal matters.

We require the Elected Members to immediately cease any threat of legal proceedings under the Council’s name towards the editor of the YRN. If Mr Morris wishes to proceed then he should do so only as a private citizen, using his own financial resources.

We regard this threat against YRN as an attack on the principles of democracy and freedom of expression. These principles create a space, particularly in cartoons, for presentation of views, even if these views are contrary or contentious to persons in roles in the different levels of governance.

The 'In the Loop' section should also be reinstated because this is the only means for many or our elderly residents to keep abreast of Council matters.
