The Granville Ct. Banyan Tree is a century old and until recently has been a protected historic treasure near the heart of St Petersburg. Please join us in asking our Mayor of "Tree City", Rick Kriseman, to set a precedent for the State to let them know that despite the passing of the Private Property Protection Act, the City of St Petersburg protects our trees!

Initially the new property owners had the City Arborist assess the tree and all agreed that it needed to be trimmed. They also promised all those in favor of protecting it that they would not pursue removal, unfortunately they did not keep their word. The new investment property owners sought out another Arborists opinion who then deemed the Banyan Tree to be diseased and consequently the City of St Petersburg signed off on the trees removal. Although the City of St Petersburg has an ordinance that protects historic trees such as this one, the City has deemed this tree a public endangerment. The property owners hired El Cheapo to assess and cut down the tree. Many other arborists and environmental groups highly disagree with that status and are calling for protection. We're asking our City to seek another opinion before removing the entire tree and in the very least, creating more proactive measures for caring for our historic trees before they become a public endangerment and subject to removal.
