Albuquerque's Rapid Transit project must preserve historic landmarks along Route 66.

The Albuquerque Rapid Transit project will cause serious and permanent damage to local, small businesses, residents and landmark buildings in historically important areas along Albuquerque's Route 66/Central Avenue. This badly designed project permanently removes/destroys hundreds of mature trees, landscaped medians and many valuable small business parking spaces. FOUR lanes of diesel buses running along narrow streets in historic areas will create extreme congestion and compromise pedestrian safety. Route 66/Central Avenue is a National Scenic Byway. Thousands of travelers visit Albuquerque each year for this reason. The Albuquerque Rapid Transit project ignores the historic charm and character of this section of Route 66.
Albuquerque's Mayor and City officials have ignored us - thousands of citizens, businesses and stakeholders have protested - and have denied us fair input into this massive project. Current plans and information about this project have been impossible for us to access. We ask - why?
We want Albuquerque Rapid Transit either delayed or stopped until:
- The City provides accurate and current information about this project
- A National Environmental Policy Act impact study as required by the Federal Transportation Authority is conducted.
- A better bus system - one that enhances and improves the street, not destroys it - is designed with stakeholder input.
We are local people who love Albuquerque. We are deeply interested in creating livable relationships between historically valuable landmarks, modern urban transportation needs and a sustainable, healthy local economy. We want the City of Albuquerque to help us use the huge amount of cash this project will bring in from the Federal Government to improve and enhance our street, not destroy it.
