Jim Koury started this petition to Mayor, City of Oneonta Gary Herzig and

We strongly support the development of the Riverside Apartments in Oneonta and call on city leaders to act in the best interests of our residents and community by approving this well-designed and much-needed affordable housing project.

Study after study has shown that the lack of affordable housing has reached a crisis point in Oneonta and Otsego County. Without a quality place to live, many of our residents are unable to find suitable employment, raise their families, and become contributing members of society. Similarly, the negative impacts on our community escalate. Unemployment and poverty rise; our health care, public safety and social services resources are overwhelmed; and our economy and businesses suffer across the board, from a scarcity of skilled employees to declines in production and revenue.

Riverside Apartments is a step in the right direction: a 64-unit, boulevard-style complex that is integrated appropriately into the nearby community. It is located on bus lines, near businesses, and adjacent to health care providers. And it is permitted under the current zoning for the parcel. In short, it is the right project at the right time, and it represents the citizens of Oneonta taking control of their future.

Furthermore, we are fortunate that a well-known, well-regarded member of our community is the developer. Rehabilitation Support Services has been part of Oneonta for more than 30 years. We know them, we trust them, and we believe in them as the best organization take on this project. RSS has explained the project in detail at www.riversideoneonta.com

The false rhetoric and obstructionist views spread by opponents is misguided at best, destructive at worst. We know Oneonta is better than that. We proudly sign this petition to request that decision-makers rise above the pettiness and support this worthwhile and necessary community revitalization.
