Why this petition matters

Started by Sophie Morgan

The Government's current policies on homelessness focus on a one size fits all system, which is not the case. In this scenario, those that are deemed to be outside of the norm, or too difficult to handle are often ignored or avoided. This petition aims to encourage the new Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, to push for local level strategies and policies in order to focus on tackling the issue of homelessness in Leeds itself.

Government statistics show that, prior to the pandemic in 2019, there were more than 400 individuals who have been seen begging, rough sleeping or homeless in the City Centre. These figures have increased following the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who have fled domestic abuse are often ignored due to no local connection to Leeds, but this is seemingly unfair.
