This is the most horrible thing, to neglect the incarcerated. To put their lives in jeopardy. They should have done this long ago. WHY??? isn't theree an evacuation plan in place.??

There are not only prisoners that are on this island, there are also guards, doctors, homeless and mentally disabled people there too. Is right to possibly deprive them of their lives because they work or reside on an island that also houses a prison...No.

This is not just a practice in New York. Most Correctional Institutions across the country have evacuation plans that call for a lock-doewn of all prisoners before the STAFF evacuate. Leaving the incarcerated people to suffer whatever the disaster may be. Look into what happened to all the people that dies in Hurricane Katrina in prisons or jail.

Because everyone deserves a way "OUT" in an emergency.

Whatever reason landed them in prison does not justify their being deprived of their right to survive, in this case survive a disaster.

This is an incredibly dangerous situation. If some sort of catastrophe were to hit Riker's Island, what would happen to its approximately 12,000 residents? Would they be left to die or be injured? Would they be trampled in an effort to escape? Would they die scared and helpless from smoke inhalation in their cells? Just because these people have been convicted of a crime doesn't mean they should be left for dead in the event of an emergency. Please show some compassion for your fellow human beings. These are your brothers and sisters, regardless of the bad choices they may have made in the past.

The reason most prisoners are even in jail is political expediency so the economic injustice we live under does not have to be remedied. The republican neo-liberal, profit over people mob make a fortune from incarceration and neo-fascist cops and prosecutors get their rocks off.

People who have a mental illness or are homeless should not be in jail and despite what a person has done they deserved to be protected in times of natural disaster and for those who think they dont what about the worker who work there ???
