In the city of Montreal, the growing issue of homelessness is not one that can be ignored. As there are other issues such as housing shelters and even the rise of COVID-19, architectural designs in Montreal make these matters worse. These architectural designs such as metal studs, concrete barriers, spikes and excessive armrests on park benches are being incorporated into the city's public spaces to reduce loitering, and homeless persons sleeping.

A new plan has been devised to make people pay money to sit on park benches or picnic tables in parks in Dorval. People would have to insert money in order to be able to sit on the park benches, which are equipped with spikes. The spikes disappear once money is inserted, and it would cost $ 10-20 to sit on these benches or picnic tables. This is described as a method to make sure there are enough places for local people to sit, but the true motive seems to be to prevent homeless people from being able to sit or sleep.

These 'defensive designs' target some of the most vulnerable members of society, especially the homeless who rely on public spaces the most in the city. Please sign to help stop these designs from being incorporated in our cities in Canada and to advocate for homeless communities.
