Decision Maker Response

Sadiq Khan’s response

Feb 4, 2020 — Dear Petitioners,

Thank you for your petition submitted on the Change.org website about saving Guardian Angels RC Primary School, Mile End.

The Mayor is sorry to hear about the changes at the school and the disruption this is having to the education of the students.

He understands that the changes to staffing, budget issues and the threat of closure must be very worrying for students, staff and the community.

The Mayor shares your concerns about school funding in London. He has urged the Government to reverse damaging cuts and give schools the resources they need to deliver effective education and other interventions to support the most vulnerable students. In particular, he raised the considerable funding shortfalls for learners with special educational needs and disabilities. He will continue to press London’s case on school funding with the Education Secretary.

The growth in London’s population in recent decades has created great challenges for local authorities and schools. In March 2018, the Greater London Authority’s (GLA) City Intelligence Unit published school place demand projections showing projected demand for primary and secondary places for each academic year to 2027/28. You might be interested to see these at: https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/pan-london-school-place-demand.

The Mayor has no responsibility or statutory role in relation to education and is therefore not able to intervene directly with the school.

We note that you have also sent this petition to the Education Secretary, and you may also wish to contact your local Member of Parliament.

Thank you again for raising this issue with the Mayor.

Yours sincerely,

Public Liaison Unit
