Install a speed hump on the 200 block of Mike Drive to slow down traffic for safety

The citizens of the Walnut Hill community in the town of Elkton, MD petition the city to install a Traffic Calming Device on Mike Drive where many motorists are breaking the speed limit and traveling at high speeds, therefore putting children at risk of being hit. Many motorists travel 50 mph on this main street at all hours of the day, and we are concerned about our children. The vulnerable population consists of elementary school aged children who spend a majority of their time playing outside. In addition, ice cream trucks and school buses travel frequently up and down the street, attracting even more people to the road.
Three years ago, a three-year-old was hit by a speeding car in the 200 block of Mike Drive; he was left lying in the street because of a hit-and-run. Police responded and ambulance was dispersed. Gratefully, he suffered only minor injuries. Unfortunately, the amount of traffic speeding down Mike Drive has not improved.
Traffic concerns were discussed at the Open Walnut Hill Board of Directors’ meeting on March 22, 2017. Residents reported that cars are traveling so fast on Mike Drive that it is impossible to get their vehicle tag numbers or to identify drivers. At the meeting, Walnut Hill residents were in favor of using a traffic calming device to make our neighborhood safer (i.e. speed bump, speed hump, or rumble strips).
We feel this is an urgent matter because summer is approaching and school will not be in session.
