Friends of Excel Academy started this petition to Mayor Muriel Bowser and

Excel Academy became part of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. It was formally a charter school that DCPS pulled into it's network. Excel Academy is currently housed in the Birney School (2501 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE - near the Anacostia Metro Station) which is being leased to a charter school incubator. Due to Excel Academy being a public school they are forced to move from this space in the 2020-21 school year.

Help is needed with identifying and modernizing a building in Ward 8 that is metro accessible and safe for the nearly 500 enrolled students (367 of which are Ward 8 residents). The school enrolls students between PreK-3 to 8th grade. The girls at Excel Academy deserve the same level of advocacy that other district schools have received.

DCPS has sent no communication to Excel Academy families about the status of a permanent location, nor have they indicated a prospective location for the school. Excel Academy desires to keep its students together during this transition.

By signing this petition, we ask for your support and advocacy in:
·         demanding Mayor Bowser and DCPS create transparency in the costs/budget for securing a permanent location. A projected budget is needed for  1) remaining in the Birney School with recommended renovations and 2) developing a state-of-the-art facility that is as equally accessible to the Metro as the current location (e.g. Malcolm X Opportunity Center or a comparable space in Ward 8). This will help the Excel Academy PTO and families make an informed and fiscally responsible decision about their preference in location.

·         requesting that DCPS and the Office of the Mayor treat our school community with dignity by holding a meeting at Excel Academy to formally communicate with parents, students, staff and members of the community about the status of the location search and timeline for any actions taken.
