We residents of Washington, DC would like to request that indoor public pools be reopened this fall. This has already occurred in neighboring areas, including Montgomery County, Maryland and Northern Virginia. To our knowledge, there are no cases of people getting covid at public pools. They have put in place protocols including requiring online reservations, scheduled/set usage times, mask requirements, regular cleaning by staff and reduced capacity. Because it is also known that you cannot contract the virus through chlorinated pools, there should be no reason why you cannot safely reopen all indoor pools. Many of us swim for exercise and to help our physical and mental well-being. This would also allow your aquatics staff to return to work and perhaps hire additional staff, helping DC residents who have been furloughed or are unemployed. And finally as taxpayers, we would like to have access to places that have been available to us in the past.
