Make city arts supports in Burlington fair and inclusive

This petition had 344 supporters

The City of Burlington invests a lot of public money in the arts every year. That funding is spent by a city arts office that does not include artists or city residents in how it’s governed. Community members do not have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect how the city’s arts funding is spent, in shaping arts policies in an ongoing way, or in city planning relating to the arts.

This petition arose from a city-wide community discussion about how the arts are served by the city of Burlington. Artists and community arts leaders have witnessed and been affected by local arts spending, policies and planning that haven’t represented our community in a fair and inclusive way. A spirit of inclusion and collaboration has been missing from the city’s arts mission, and the activities of the city arts office haven’t addressed the needs of all artists, or all areas of the city.

Other city departments are governed with the help of city residents who bring their diverse strengths and experiences to a city commission that is supervised by the city council. Burlington has many intensely experienced artists and public-minded community builders and leaders who aren't granted the ability to contribute their wisdom or values to the city’s yearly investment in the arts. They represent an untapped resource that is willing to take the next steps toward better arts resource management in Burlington. Establishing an arts commission would be a positive solution that sets Burlington up for an ethical and successful future that builds on its prestige as an arts-friendly city.

This petition asks the Burlington City Council and Mayor to support forming a Burlington arts commission of city residents supervised by the City Council to which the appointed director of the Burlington City Arts office would be accountable.
