It is time HRM Council invested in our sidewalk snow clearing program.
Council is meeting this Tuesday, November 24th, to discuss a report for changes to sidewalk snow removal. Looking over the report, I see no mention to purchasing more equipment and filling vacant jobs in order to ensure the service standard is met. Instead I see:
The reality is, if we are truly concerned about the quality of our sidewalk snow removal, we are going to have to invest in the program. If we take seriously our obligation to make sure our sidewalks are accessible for every person in the HRM, we need to beef up our resources and staff allocation.
It's time to tell Halifax Council and senior staff enough is enough!
We need to:
1. Stop relying on Performance Based Contracts to clear our sidewalks and start using in-house staff and equipment to get the job done.
2. Purchase the necessary equipment to clear our sidewalks during every snow event.
3. Fill the 60 vacant staff positions that have not been filled since Richard Butts was hired as CAO of Halifax.
