Keep Union Twsp Recycling and Mini Dump Open

On April 5, 2017 Union Twsp committee voted to close the Union Township Recycling Center and Mini-Dump on May 1, 2017.
The UT Committee’s agendas and minutes for the last 2 months on the UT web site and do not indicate that this was a discussion point, except l a single reference to recycling: a bullet item that was apparently part of the 2017-18 budget discussion. There is no reference to any discussions about closing the UT recycling facility or any details or indications of a decision to shutter the recycling center. Although the decision to end municipal recycling was apparently made at the April 5 UT Committee meeting, there were signs at the recycling center by Saturday April 8 informing the public about the May 1 closure. This seems to indicate that the intent to close the center had been planned for a while.
The recycling center and mini-dump are benefits to the Township, especially the multi-material, single-stream recycling. Many residents use "the dump" and believe that the Committee was hasty in deciding to close it. Public comments were not solicited.
Union Township residents must be involved in the decision making process and a measure of the sentiment of UT residents needs to be taken before the recycling center and mini-dump are closed. The Committee needs to know if UT residents consider this a worthwhile service. Without this service, we will see more illegally dumped solid waste along our roads and in our parks. UT residents need to know why this decision was made.
Please come show your support at the April 19th Township Committee Meeting or contact a member of the Township Committee http://www.uniontwp-hcnj.gov/twp-committee.html#_ .
