During World War II, our government encouraged us to keep back yard chickens and gardens. Not only does a small backyard flock provide a family with healthy fresh eggs, but also teaches children a wonderful lesson about the sustainability, environmentalist, and healthy food choices that will stay with them for a life time. 
Just like any pet, responsible owners are the key. When maintained properly, there is no smell and they do not attract rodents. An enclosed run (with ample space per chicken) without a rooster is a wonderful way to enjoy your pet chickens while respecting your neighbors. 
Several neighboring communities have changed ordinances to allow back yard chickens. During this important election year, all council members and mayoral candidates should consider all the voters who find this an important decision… and an easy one for council to vote on an change.
