Campaign Pain Free Families started this petition to Mayor Marty Walsh

On September 26, 2019, an elementary school student in the North End was pricked by a used needle while playing at a local park. Unfortunately, this is an all too common problem in our community.

The Problem:

14,000 needles are found on the ground each week in Boston alone and many people do not know what to do when they find one. While the city has designated some needle disposal drop-off sites, these efforts are not enough. Used needles are found in parks, school grounds, and public bathrooms, making them easily accessible to children and putting children at risk for exposure to dangerous drugs (e.g., fentanyl and heroin) and more than 20 bloodborne diseases including HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis B.

The Plan:

As of now, Boston ONLY HAS 13 LOCATIONS and FOUR PART-TIME SPECIALISTS dedicated to needle disposal. To compensate for this lack of needle disposal resources the city is directing EMS’ limited resources towards needle collection. We urge Mayor Marty Walsh expand the Mobile Sharps Collection team and provide more sharp-disposal boxes in places where needles are commonly found. This will decrease the number of needles that are left on the ground and ensure that our children have access to the safe play environments they deserve. We also call on Mayor Marty Walsh to educate Boston residents on what to do when needles are found and if necessary, how to safely dispose of them. The community can be educated by posting informational flyers in public areas.

Join the Fight:

As a community, we can prevent our children from harm while they are outside. Sign this petition and call Mayor Walsh at (617) 635-4500 to demand a NEEDLE FREE environment for our children.
