DO NOT MOVE THE Jefferson Davis Monument to Museum
This petition had 350 supporters
A group of people want to remove the Jefferson Davis monument from Washington Park in downtown Brownsville, TX which has sat quietly for almost 100 years. Jefferson Davis is a prominent figure of the American civil war and his ties to the confederacy but what many people may not know is that he was also an important figure during the Mexican-American war.
Brownsville was a key city during the Mexican-American war as the first major battles took place such as the battle of Palo Alto and the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. Jefferson Davis volunteered and raised a regiment from Mississippi that took part of the siege of Monterrey in the battle of Buena Vista under the command of General Zachary Taylor.
People argue that this monument should be removed or destroyed simply because of the reasoning that Jefferson Davis was involved in the civil war and that he owned slaves and having a monument of a figure who owned slaves is a symbol of oppression or racism. Then again we use the $1 bill and quarters on US currency that have George Washington and he owned slaves, should we stop using money? I could argue that people shouldn't fly US flags because that means imperialism and how the US military oppresses people in other countries. I don't condone slavery but these monuments serve as a symbol of history of how far we have come. We should keep the monument and put our efforts into better use.
