"Ganda, pahinging digits."
These are only some of the insulting messages that women of varying ages experience almost on a daily basis. These suggestive phrases, along with unnecessary gestures such as wolf-whistling and smirks, all lead to one phenomenon - catcalling. The Philippines is not a stranger to this issue. According to a survey done by SWS back in February 2016, it is shown that women ages 18 to 24 in the Barangays of Payatas and Bagong Silangan in Quezon City, 88% of the women surveyed experienced sexual harassment at least once. Across all ages, 12 to 55 and above, wolf whistling and catcalling were the most common forms.
This is alarming. Can you imagine being sexually objectified in that young age?
However, all hope is not lost. You can do something about it. In Quezon City, an ordinance has already been passed in favor of increasing the possibility of taking legal action if a person instigates sexual harrassment, no matter the degree.
Join our cause as we try to emphasize the need of an ordinance to penalize people who contribute to the pervading objectification of women in Marikina as well. Sign this petition and let our voices be heard.
