Build a SAFE bus stop at the corner of New Haw Creek and Bell Road.

The bus stop that exists currently at the corner of New Haw Creek Road and Bell Road in the Haw Creek neighborhood of East Asheville is unsafe for the students and community members who use it. This bus stop is at an intersection that serves the inner neighborhoods of Haw Creek, the East Asheville Recreation Center (pool, baseball and tennis facilities), and Evergreen Community Charter School.
Many students in the middle school at Evergreen Community Charter School depend on this city bus to get from school to home or other activities in the city and it is UNSAFE. There is no sidewalk, a sloping shoulder and no cover, which means that students waiting at this stop are subjected to unsafe car traffic and weather (sun, rain, etc). Many more students would be given permission to use this bus stop if it were a safer place to wait.
Although this bus stop may lack in a high volume of riders, we are asserting that the riders who use the bus stop are important AND that the lack of safety at the stop may be a consideration for community members and influence them NOT to ride the bus from this location.
We would like the City of Asheville to take seriously the safety of our students, as well as the potential to increase access to the public city facility and neighborhoods that this bus stop serves and build a permanent, safe bus stop enclosure at this location.
