Bethany Belbin started this petition to Lynn Dollin (Mayor) and

The town of Innisfil wants to make an amendment to the Fireworks by-law to be inclusive of those who celebrate the Chinese New Year and Diwali. However, in the process they are not being inclusive of other residents, specifically those who suffer, or live with someone who suffers from Autism, PTSD and dementia who find fireworks loud, scary and traumatic.

I am lucky that I do not fit into either of those categories. However, I am impacted by the fireworks as a pet owner.  Three years ago I made the decision to get a dog to help me with my extreme anxiety and depression, which has helped tremendously. Although, in the past year my dog has developed a fear of fireworks and this past Victoria Day has really shown to me that something needs to change. It was like hell on earth for 4 straight days. I felt useless to help my dog as he stared at me with his big, blue pleading eyes as he shook.

As residents we should not have to medicate our loved ones in order to get through a holiday where fireworks are almost guaranteed to go off. Additionally, we have seen fireworks being used improperly and almost going into a neighbours garage. Enough is enough, I want to be able to relax and enjoy my holidays instead of being stressed and anxious about what the evenings will hold. I am tired of sitting on the bathroom floor in the basement with my dog because it is the only room without windows, while others are having a grand time seeing the light show.

If the Innisfil town council is worried about being inclusive, then try being inclusive towards all residents and not just those that they pick and choose. Please sign my petition to help ban fireworks in Innisfil residential areas.
