Let Our Kids Play!
Let Our Kids Play!
Dear Mr. Mayor and Whitchurch-Stouffville Town Council,
It's time to open our rinks and recreational facilities and let our kids play!
As the number of cases continue to decline in York Region and Stouffville we believe opening facilities can resume in a safe and responsible manner and as permitted under the Red Zone guidelines. Surrounding communities are currently opening their facilities and there are no regional guidelines for keeping our facilities closed.
Those of us with younger children have come to realize it is extremely important for the kids of our community to begin exercising and playing again. Many children have suffered anxiety and depression during this difficult time cut off from friends and a return to play con only help them on their road to recovery.
Under the current Red Zone guidelines the York Region Medical Officer (YRMO) Dr. Kurji does not recommend or agree with any shutdown of taxpayer funded sports and recreation facilities at this time. From a mental and physical health perspective and according to the YRMO this is not recommended.
While we appreciate your efforts to keep our children, their parents and our community safe from COVID-19, as noted in a recent Globe & Mail article, Dr. Kurji notes it should not be at the expense of life. He was quoted as saying:
“You know there was a saying at medical school: As you do your surgery, make sure that the patient doesn’t die whilst you are operating,” Dr. Kurji said. “You could actually just, as it were, strangle the life out of the whole community just because you are focused so heavily on preventing COVID-19.”
With rinks and facilities elsewhere opening up, we are left to wonder why the Town has not acted with diligence in re-opening taxpayer funded facilities. We the undersigned can only assume that any further shutdown of facilities in our community which go against current regional health recommendations might be done for budgetary reasons. We would hope that the grown ups could shoulder more of the burden our kids have to carry. Let’s not balance our budget on the backs of our kids.
With no medical advice or evidence against it, we request the reopening of sports and recreation facilities forthwith, with priority going to our residents, for our kids’ physical and mental well-being. It's time to let our kids play.
We thank you in advance.
