No sidewalk tents or camping in the Haight

0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,500!

We, the undersigned residents and merchants of Haight Ashbury neighborhood, request the prohibition of tents, or any other type of camping equipment, on our public sidewalks or any other public areas within the neighborhood boundaries of the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood.

We are not including areas designated as Safe Sleeping Sites (such as 730 Stanyan) where food, safety, sanitation and other services are provided for unhoused residents. Instead, we are concerned with unhoused individuals that take up residence on the sidewalks of our public streets.

We believe by allowing public sidewalk camping without services creates an unhealthy environment for both the housed and unhoused residents of our neighborhood. In addition, lack of access to proper hygiene, failure to wear masks and maintain social distance puts our entire community at risk of spreading COVID 19. In short, allowing people to live on our streets without services is creating a health hazard for everyone.

We understand that the COVID-19 pandemic has strained city resources, diminished our city's economy, and created challenges to our everyday lives. However, San Francisco still remains a world class city, with a resilient economy, a rich culture, and an unrelenting compassion for those who are less fortunate.

We understand that homelessness is not a crime. However, San Francisco’s public policy on homelessness is a disturbing failure. No human being should have to live on the street.

Surely San Francisco can do better than to sanction outdoor living, in unsafe and unstable conditions, without providing the dignity of basic housing to our most impoverished residents.

We implore you, as the leaders of this great city, to urgently find a better solution for those without homes.
