Cut the trees down and Oakland invites a whole lot of trouble. Read Mr. Tamarin's Trees. It is a kid's book but shows the downside of the destruction of trees. If this is what you are doing a kid's book might be your level of reading.
These forests capture moisture from the bay and transfer it to the water table and help cool the city. Replacing it with grasses, heats the city and lowers the water table plus grasses are more fire prone.
