We are a group of youth activists that are living and attending school in Oakland. We have families who also live here. Many of us were born and raised here in Oakland, some of us have come here from around the world. This is our home. We are youth whose ages range from eleven to eighteen, and we care about our community.

However, a wealthy developer has plans to build a huge coal terminal in the Port of Oakland. This is not healthy for our community, nor our environment nor our climate. The mining and burning of this coal would result in over 12.5 million tons of greenhouse emissions each year and the handling and loading of coal causes coal dust, which releases mercury, lead, arsenic, and particulate matter into the air. Our community members would breathe this in every day, contributing to already high asthma rates. Our elected officials in the city of Oakland have been involved in a legal court battle to stop the coal terminal for years. Now, we, the youth want to have a voice.

Help us keep coal out of our community and our lungs – sign our petition now.

We demand fresh air; we want to stop asthma attacks, cancer, and other pollution-related illnesses; we want children to be healthy; we want to save lives; We want green healthy jobs; we demand a livable climate, an end to fossil fuels, and we strive for 100% renewable energy. We want people to be aware of this crisis that is happening to our community and environment. Many of the youth here have been working to stop coal and create environmental justice for years now. Our demands are simple and are founded on basic human rights, to which we are entitled. Not only as humans, but as living beings, and as the leaders to future generations

As long as our community continues to be threatened with coal, we call for a Restorative Justice Circle. This is the circle process we use in school to resolve difficult conflicts and heal harm done. This is the time to see all points of views and to create a solution to this dilemma. We wish for the following to be at the circle: City Officials including Rebecca Kaplan, Lynette McElhaney, and Libby Schaaf, CCIG representatives including Phil Tagami, and Youth Representatives. The government officials and CCIG have had an impact in this conflict, which is why we are calling them into the circle. The youth need to be there because we are the ones most threatened with harm from this situation.

Why now? This is a climate emergency. We have so little time before this climate chaos takes a toll on the entire human race. It is already affecting us. There are constant wildfires that affect our lives and air quality. It's hot when it's supposed to be cold.  We can't rely on the weather.

We must act now before the human race goes extinct.

The Youth need this Restorative Justice Circle from the people who were named. We are ready to take action. We know that we have to. We know that our future depends on us. Please sign to urge the powerholders we mentioned to join us in a circle
