Arturo Peal started this petition to Mayor Latoya Cantrell and

Let’s change Jackson Square to Mahalia Jackson Square.

The history of Andrew Jackson is steeped in the history of chattel slavery. He is also not a native son of New Orleans.  He does have a historical via the battle of New Orleans in 1815.  Along with that is his part in instigating the “Trail of Tears” tragedy that removed over 50,000 First Nations people from their lands.

However Mahalia Jackson was raised in the Black Pearl neighborhood, she was a civil right activist, and she continues to be a local and international icon In music.

Changing the name of Jackson Square would not be a huge burden on the city’s finances. A few signs and a ceremony to celebrate Miss Jackson. It could show the importance of civil rights in the city’s history.  And it would speak volumes about the value that the  people of New Orleans place on its most widely exported riches - music!
