Mayor Landrieu: Rescind Your Cameras and Closed Doors Security Proposal
This petition had 1,269 supporters
Dear Mayor Landrieu,
You recently proposed a $40 million security plan for the city of New Orleans that would:
- install constantly-monitored security cameras around bars and in neighborhoods.
- close bar doors at 3 a.m. across the city.
- conduct early morning street "sweeps" by law enforcement.
New Orleans is a city built on community. It is built on socializing at all hours of the day. Your proposal for pervasive surveillance and spatial policing would fundamentally change the city's culture for the worse.
Want to keep us safe? Use your $40 million to invest in officer training. Invest in improving response times. Invest in community-building. But do not invest in cameras and locks to keep us indoors.
