Greetings Mayor Pippin and Butts County Commissioners,

I would like to thank you in advance for reading this letter. My name is Jayla Perkins, I am a member of the Butts County minority community. I am writing you this letter to request the removal of the “Our Heroes” Confederate statue that stands in front of the courthouse. Though I understand it is a part of the history that this town was built upon, the message it portrays does not fit the current landscape we have here in Jackson. Black citizens of Butts County feel the prominent Confederate statue is intimidating, detrimental to their right to a fair trial, and entices hate and division. The outcry of emotions from the black community for social equity should inspire change for cultural inclusion. This transformation in our community’s culture should include the removal of the Confederate monument from the square thereby removing its negative narrative, perhaps replacing it with an art mural.

Various citizens have made their voice public on the stance to have the Confederate statue removed. The monument glorifies an era of slavery and white supremacy which, as a direct result places an unnecessary burden on black citizens in the county. The statue and the ideals it symbolizes brings about division. It does not reflect our community’s current progression, obscures other cultures, and does not represent the diverse nature of Butts County. As our county progresses along with the nation, it is imperative that minorities in our community are being heard and their request for the removal of the Confederate monument be enacted. By replacing the statue with an art mural, we will more justly represent the cultures in our communities and add positive character to the square and to Butts County’s social structure.
