Speed Bumps on Baker Street, Costa Mesa entering Mesa Verde Neighborhood.
Why this petition matters
Dear Mayor Katrina Foley & Costa Mesa City Counsil,
I am writing this petition to request speed bumps be put in on Baker Street in between Royal Palm and Labrador Dr. My family and I have only lived here for several months and there have been three major accidents where cars have been totaled because of the reckless speeding of careless drivers.
There is a speed limit of 30 MPH, yet not everyone abides by that rule. I think speed bumps at the very least will slow people down. Since my family and I have moved in, a car has sped through the four way stop in the late afternoon and took down an electrical pole/box leaving a good portion of the neighborhood without electricity for hours. My toddler who attends the Montessori nearby had to sit in the cold in the dark waiting for us to pick her up. Another person who sped through in the morning, almost hit our car parked in our driveway, and totaled his own car by hitting the curb. And just tonight, someone sped through and hit a tree and stop sign, which also resulted in a totaled car.
Thankfully in all three instances no one was extremely injured. However, families and individuals walk and bike on this street daily. And all three accidents happened at different parts of the day. I do not want to be worried daily about someone possibly damaging our property or hurting any one of us or our neighbors.
I would definitely say that the 85th percentile of traffic is greater than 30 MPH. And the average daily traffic volume is greater than 3500 vehicles total in both directions in a given 24 hour period. This is a busy street entering a neighborhood with schools and many fellow neighbors who walk, run, bike through all hours of the day. We are please asking that you add some speed bumps to help prevent further accidents that may occur in the future.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
