Tanja Kotowski started this petition to Mayor Kate Gallego City of Phoenix and

Western Star Park, our neighborhood park and playground located close to Elliot Rd & 48th St in Ahwatukee is in dire need of renovations and extended use during our long and hot summer months with a covered splash pad. - And we could have Councilmember Sal DiCiccio's support!

My family lives just a few roads down from Western Star Park. Fernando and I (Tanja) are parents of 3 young children, aged 7, 5 and 2, who have an endless supply of energy. The park is an almost daily destination for my family as we ride our bikes to the park, meet up with neighborhood friends there, spend lots of time playing at the playground, and have even celebrated a few birthdays there. Western Star Park truly plays an important role in our community!

Unfortunately, over the past years the upkeep of the park has been much neglected:

  • One of the large slides broke and was never replaced. Instead, the gap was simply "patched" with a gate to prevent children from falling from the top of the play equipment.
  • Several of the benches have worn due to rust. And the ones that broke have been removed but never replaced.
  • The large tree at the center of the play area that once provided a little additional shade to the playing children seems to have died and has since remained there dry.
  • While the large play equipment has shade sails, the swings are in need of some form of shade if the kids are to enjoy them year-round.
  • Additional trees surrounding the playground that have been damaged due to storms over the past years have been removed but none have been replanted in that area.
  • Lastly, we truly hope to have a shaded splash pad area added to Western Star Park, so that the children may have more use of the park during our long and extremely hot summer months.

Councilmember Sal DiCiccio and his office (Council District 6) have kindly contacted the City of Phoenix about the state of our park. They have informed me that the City is aware of the situation but that there are currently no funds allocated to this project.

But this can be changed by us!

If there is sufficient interest and a little initiative in our community, I've been told Councilmember Sal DiCiccio would support our efforts. We need at least 200 supporters. And the timing is great - it's budget time for the City.

Would you please consider signing this petition and sharing it with your friends/family in the neighborhood? If so, we can potentially have Western Star Park renovated and/or a splash pad added.

Thank you so much in advance,
Tanja
